HUMANA NOVA AS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Social entrepreneurship is a business model aimed at achieving a positive ecological and social impact in an economically sustainable way. Humana Nova’s impact on the community arises from the synergy of three core principles: caring for people, caring for the planet, and reinvesting profits. The Humana Nova Social Cooperative is a social enterprise that addresses three pressing issues in today’s society:
  • Work integration of socially marginalized groups We employ persons with disabilities and other marginalized groups who face significant barriers in accessing employment. In doing so, we actively contribute to the sustainable development of the local community, improve the quality of life and wellbeing of marginalized individuals and their families, and help reduce poverty.
  • Textile waste management and caring for the planet We manage textile surpluses by extending their lifespan or adding new value through a circular textile waste management system. The textiles we collect are reused through second-hand use or redesign, and the remaining textiles are recycled. To date, we have collected over 4,500 tonnes of textiles. In our sewing workshop in Čakovec, we use locally sourced and eco-certified materials from Turkey.
  • Reinvestment of profits into business growth and development We reinvest profits to preserve existing jobs, create new ones, foster growth and development, invest in employees, and expand and optimize our operations. We aim to create added value for the benefit of the community. As a social cooperative, we are equally driven by social and commercial goals, and we are governed collectively based on cooperative principles.
What does it mean to be a social cooperative?

According to the Croatian Law on Cooperatives, a cooperative is an economic entity in which entrepreneurs—individuals—join forces with other natural or legal persons for their mutual development. The uniting of people with similar visions for a more strategic market presence is one of the guiding principles of a cooperative. At Humana Nova, the cooperative members include associations and individuals who recognize the value of this initiative and the potential of involving persons with disabilities and other socially excluded groups in the production of high-quality, in-demand products.
